Project challenge:

The owner of an online store specializing in tactical gear and equipment contacted us for assistance in optimizing his website’s visibility in Google’s organic search results.

Due to a poorly developed structure, the project initially faced many challenges. Important landing pages for categories and subcategories were absent, and metadata optimization was also lacking. The website contained numerous technical errors and poorly designed text blocks.

The project required a thorough and comprehensive approach.

Work stages

Step 1: Collection and clustering of the semantic kernel, development of the new website structure.

Prior to the collection of the semantic kernel, we provided the customer with an updated site structure – more comprehensive and as extensive as possible. Having agreed on the new structure, the next step was to assemble and cluster the semantic kernel of the site.

Step 2: Compiling metadata and Terms of Reference for writing texts for new landing pages.

We added metadata to all of the existing landing pages on the website. At the same time, we created terms of reference for writing optimized texts for these specific landing pages.

Step 3: Technical analysis of the website.

During the first months of the project, a thorough technical analysis of the site was conducted, and based on the results, the terms of reference for the software engineer were drawn up. It was necessary to improve the loading speed, incorporate some new functionalities, implement micro markups and so on.

Step 4: Developing and implementing a metadata template for product cards.

Metadata for product cards was added with a specially customized template. This significantly accelerated the work process.

Step 5: Follow-up technical analysis of the project.

After implementation of all recommendations, edits, metadata and texts on the landing pages, a follow-up technical analysis of the site was conducted to ensure proper implementation of the tasks and edits.

Step 6: External project optimization.

We started a systematic work on external optimization by analyzing our competitors’ link mass to gain insight into their external promotion strategies. Based on this information, we developed our own strategy for improving the link profile of the project, which we continue to follow, as it provides good results.

Step 7: Creating and maintaining a blog.

Analysis of competitors has indicated that a significant fraction of incoming traffic from competing sites is information queries. Accordingly, the Blog section was created and designed for the project, in which topical informative articles are regularly published every month.

PM Casebook: Negotiations, Deadlines, Success

Working on the project of an online store for tactical gear and equipment quickly went beyond a typical SEO case. We expected standard challenges—high competition, targeting a niche audience, and dealing with technical issues. But reality turned out to be different: search engines and advertising platforms didn’t like our project.

Project Challenges: Censorship and Restrictions

From the very beginning, we encountered unexpected problems:

  • Sensitive topic—search engines restricted ad placements and search results for certain keywords, associating them with weapons.
  • Ad campaign blockages—Google Ads rejected ads, social media platforms imposed restrictions on promotion.
  • Partners’ fears—some platforms refused to host links, worried about violating their policies.
  • Audience suspicion—users wanted to buy, but they were wary of an online store associated with military topics.

Solution: SEO as a Covert Operation

To keep the project from “drowning” in restrictions, we developed a strategy that resembled a special operation:

  1. Adjusted keyword strategy—we removed trigger words and replaced them with neutral terms (e.g., “field gear” instead of “military equipment”).
  2. Expanded content through expert articles—we published reviews on gear for tourists, survivalists, and law enforcement without mentioning banned terms.
  3. Utilized alternative platforms—we began working with niche forums, specialized blogs, and YouTube content where the audience was already loyal.
  4. Optimized visual content—we avoided images that could be seen as “militarized”, focusing on the practical applications of gear for civilian use.
  5. Built a trusted brand—we added detailed guarantees, reviews, and case studies to reduce customers’ anxiety.

Results: Workaround Paths Led to Success

Despite all the barriers, the site started gaining organic traffic, and the number of orders steadily increased. We managed to build an SEO strategy that worked under restrictions, and the brand earned a reputation as a reliable supplier of tactical gear.

This case proved: PM isn’t just about managing deadlines. Sometimes it’s about working “in the shadows”, finding workarounds, understanding how restrictions work, and turning them into opportunities. If one path is blocked, it’s time to build a new one.
